Cash withdrawals
For security reasons, we set a limit on the maximum cash amount you may obtain with your Credit Card on any one occasion or during any one day. The current limit for cash withdrawals can be found in our Credit Card Guide.
In addition to our limits the owner of the cash machine or the Bank or Building Society that you use may have their own lower limits which they will impose.
Contactless card payments
You can make quick and easy contactless payments using your Credit Card without entering your PIN.
Your contactless payments will still be very secure thanks to the following.
- Contactless uses the same security features as Chip and PIN
- We'll sometimes ask for a Chip and PIN transaction to confirm that it's still you using the card
- You'll always need to complete a Chip and PIN transaction on any new card before contactless will work.
Get a contactless card
We'll automatically send you a contactless card when your current card expires.
Activate your contactless card
When you get your new contactless card, you must use it for a Chip and PIN transaction or an ATM cash withdrawal before making a contactless purchase (so we know you've received your card). Once you've done that, you're ready to make contactless payments.
Using your contactless card
Any retailer who displays the Contactless Indicator can accept contactless payments. The current limit for contactless payments can be found in our Credit Card Guide.
You must use your new contactless card with your PIN at least once then follow the steps below to start making contactless payments:
- When paying for purchases, look for the Contactless Indicator
- Touch the reader with your contactless card
- Confirm successful payment when you see the green light and hear the beep
- The reader will confirm that your payment is approved.
If you touch your purse or wallet containing more than one contactless card (including an Oyster card, contactless debit or credit card) on a reader you could experience card clash. Therefore we strongly recommend that you remove the card you want to use from your wallet or purse when touching the reader to make sure the right card is used. But don't worry, if you do present two cards to the reader by mistake, only one payment will be taken.
If you've used contactless multiple times in a row, for extra security you may sometimes be required to insert your card and enter your PIN to make the transaction.
The Contactless Indicator mark, consisting of four graduating arcs, is a trademark owned by and used with permission of EMVCo, LLC.
Security is our priority
Making payments without entering any security details or a PIN may raise some concerns. We'd like to reassure you just how safe and secure contactless payments actually are.
Protecting you
Contactless uses the latest secure encryption technology (the same as Chip and PIN) so you can feel confident when using it to pay for things. It only works when a card is close to the card reader. This makes it virtually impossible for any details to be intercepted while in use. For extra protection, sometimes you may have to enter your PIN during a contactless transaction just to make sure it's always you using the card.
Opt out of contactless payments
If you don't want to make contactless payments, you can just use Chip and PIN instead.
Opt out of contactless payments on your debit card at any time by calling us. A new card number will be issued to you without the contactless feature and your PIN will remain the same.
Don't forget to let any companies you may hold an ongoing subscription with know that your card details have changed.
Future dated and recurring card payments
When you give your card details for things like magazine subscriptions, online streaming services, payday loans and insurance renewals you're agreeing a future-dated card payment.
This sort of payment lets you authorise a retailer to take future payment(s) from your account using your card number. It's sometimes referred to as a 'recurring transaction' or 'continuous payment authority'.
How they work
You can set them up online, in person or by phone by giving your card details. Payment amounts and dates can be variable. When your card expires or is blocked and then reissued, the company can get the new card information to continue taking payments.
Cancelling a subscription or recurring transaction
The easiest way to stop future payments is to get in touch with the company and cancel your subscription or agreement with them. They should confirm that your recurring payment authorisation has been cancelled as well as the date this will take effect from.
If you haven't been able to stop future payments by talking to the company, we can try and stop them for you though this may impact other payments you may want to make to them. For example, if you asked us to stop Amazon Prime payments from your card, a different payment to Amazon could also be stopped.
It's important that you contact the company to cancel your arrangement with them. If you don't, they may still be able to take a payment from your card if they use a different company name.
If you want us to stop your payments, or you've previously stopped payments and changed your mind, then please call us.
Using your card abroad - fee calculator
Use our fee calculator to help you to understand how much a Debit Card transaction may cost when using your card in a different currency.

This calculator will help you understand how much your transaction could cost you when choosing to pay in local currency.
Unrecognised transactions
